Insignificantly Significant
In this visual diary called Insignificantly Significant, I tried to convey the idea of tend to define our identities with loud, colorful events, belongings, and expressions. Birthday parties, graduations, designer handbags, shiny shoes, and an ambitious career, these are what our society seems to hold dear. In this book, I do the opposite. Consider a laugh or voice, so subconscious, automatic, and uncontrollable yet you can use these to identify a person instantly. The shortcuts we use regularly to go from place to place. My aim was to discover and express the identity inherent in the little things—be it in size or significance—the things most of us take for granted. This was an exercise in awareness, as I forced myself to pay close attention to my own day-to-day actions, making sure to have camera at hand to capture these insignificantly significant objects and moments. I approached this piece as I would a visual diary, keeping track of the minutiae of life, while maintaining a visual coherence such that the meanings of juxtaposed images could easily flow and connect.
